Araucaria schmidii Information
General Information:
This species is restricted to moist montane forests of the North East Massifs (Panie Mountain range) and is found only on the highest summits in New Caledonia, and is therefore the most cold-tolerant of the New Caledonian species. Unusally for a New Caledonian Araucaria it forms multi-stem trees, suggesting a loss of apical stem dominance. Its extremely restricted distribution is cause for conservation concern. IUCN conservation Red List status: Vulnerable.
