This small tree occurs on ultramafic soils at low altitude on coastal slopes. It has disjunct populations in the far north verses the east coast of Grand Terre. There has in the past been some confusion as to whether some populations should be referred to this species or A. bernieri. Habitat degredation due to mining has lead to fragmentation of a number of populations of this species. IUCN conservation Red List status: Endangered.
