Butia witeckii Information

Identification:
This is a newly described species of large Butia from the central region of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil: Quevedos. S 29°22'07,17 W 54°00'45,31. The author 'Kelen Pureza Soares' claims this to be different to Butia yatay based on the larger size of the fruits and seeds, also on minor morphological differences between the plants. I disagree with this conclusion based on these minor differences all being within the range of characteristics of Butia yatay, and although this exceptionally large form is horticulturally interesting I think this species will one day be returned to B. yatay, though possibly as a subspecies.
